Here are some effective ways to control house sparrows.

• If a sparrow does succeed at taking over a house, plug the entrance hole so that the sparrows will be discouraged from nesting in that particular house.

• If you have a feeder that has sparrows as guests, take it down immediately. If sparrows are attracted to your yard for food, they have a much greater chance of finding and taking over a bluebird house.

• When selecting a location for your bluebird houses, make sure to select an area far away from any house sparrow nest sites. A bluebird house in a house sparrow nesting area is a clear invitation for trouble.

Important Note:

House Sparrows are NOT protected by any federal laws (This is because they are an introduced species . . . not native). It is by all means legal to kill House Sparrows humanely. The best way to do this is compress their lungs with a thumb and index finger. To dispose of House Sparrows, place the dead bird(s) in a biodegradable container and bury them.
